Flights are to the airport to the north of the city
You get the train from Terminal 4 or Terminal 2 to the Neuvos Ministeros metro station in the centre of Madrid for $5 and it takes 12 minutes. The train also stops at Atocha and Principe Pio stations and runs every 5 minutes.
There is also a bus which costs $5 and runs every 15 minutes.
A taxi is about $30 which is a flat fare to Central Madrid destinations.
Like all big cities finding somewhere to stay in the centre can be expensive. Two areas are cheaper – just south of Plaza Major there are a few budget hotels or nearby in the Peurto del Sol SE district you can find apartments that let you do your own meal options cutting down on cost and is walkabl.
Two I have stayed at are
Apartmentos Madrid Huertas
Tinto Y Tapas on way from Atocha railway station to town. Opens at 13:00
Restaurante Nuevo Horno De Santa Teresa
Gran Via is the main shopping centre with all the big department stores.
Centro Commercial Madrid is between Sol and Gran Via.
