Orkney

A trip to see the Ring of Brodgar and cycle the flat roads of Orkney.  The history of Orkney goes back 5000 years and is a World Heritage site for its many prehistoric buildings.

The oldest pyramid in the world is at Maeshowe, stone circles in abundance, prehistoric villages out of the Flintstones, Viking silver ,the biggest collection of Viking runes in the UK and the Marquis of Montroses ancestral home.

The Hudson Bay Company that contolled Canada  for 100’s of years was 80% Orcadian men.

Today 47 % of the mainland population is made up of incomers.

Friday

Stay on Burnside dairy farm for two nights.

Saturday

Cycle 11 miles to Skara Brae 5000 year old prehistric village via Standing Stones of Stroness, Ness of Brodgar  and 8 miles back.

Drink Orkney IPA in the Ferry Inn and then go to Orkney International Science Festival events.

Sunday

Cycle to Kirkwall 10 am or another time on bus  timetable.

Monday

Ferry 06:30 arriving 08:00
