Friday 5th September 53 miles Leuchars to Birnam
6.ooam start. 7.08 train to Dundee. A run through Tentsmuir Forest, across the Tay Bridge, stop at Tescos’s Dundee for breakfast, Wetherspoons Capital Asset pub Perth for lunch. Then up to Bankfoot and onto Birnam where the B and B was double booked so we had to get other accommodation. 2 of us stayed in the Merryburn Hotel where we spent the evening with the very friendly locals playing clag.

Saturday 6th 15 miles Birnam to Pitlochry
Short cycle into wind to see Scotland game at 2. Stayed in Youth Hostel £14.50 a night Knockard Road, Pitlochry, PH16 5HJ 01796 472 308. Couldn’t book by phone but places left on internet site. Strange. Very sunny. Watched Scotland Macedonia game in McKays. Evening spent in Moulin Hotel where the chef tried to persuade Russell that his Venison with Bisto gravy was a blue cheese sauce .

Sunday 7th 61 miles to Callander
A long long cycle up and down hills but with beautiful scenery. Very friendly tea room in Kenmore where Russell repaired bike with help of Molly the dog. Climbed out of Killin and then went down Glen Ogle viaduct. Tried to stay in Waverley Hotel in Callander but it and many other bed and breakfasts booked – eventually found the Abbotsford Lodge.

Monday 8th 33 miles to Balloch
Andy was up for murder today as these were the worst hills of the trip – straight up and through forest tracks not very good for cycling. Raining today. Superb pints in Balloch. Brian got the first puncture of the trip as he wheeled into the pub at the end. In Edinburgh Andy and Brian jump on the Glenrothes train thinking it stopped at South Gyle only to be taken to Fife on the express…
