We cycle the North East coast of Portugal through fishing villages, past castles and stay in walled towns. We will see fisher-women in traditional costume selling fish, sample the many kinds of Port, stay in luxurious country resorts, sample cheap wine and saty in the walled city of Obidos in a 4 star hotel with a swimming pool under the walls. Tuesday 28th August – Porto – Gallery Hostel
Easyjet flight is at 07:30. Fly to Lisbon arriving 10:35. in the airport. Get the bus 208 or 705 to estacion Oriente. €2 each. Train to Porto at 12:00 or 14:00 taking 2 hours 35 minutes. On arrival we see the stunning azulejos in the front hall depicting historic batles and the history of transport.
We stay in the Gallery Hostel in Porto with free walking tour and pub crawl. The traditional dish of Porto is Francesinha and we may travel to the Restaurante Bufete Fase, Rua de Santa Catarina 1147 in Porto to eat it. An alternative is the tapas bar Casa Guedes in Praca dos Poveiros. Probably the best eating place is O Restaurante da Alzira at Viela do Buraco, 3 , Cais da Ribeira 46-47 on the river side. Wednesday 29th August – 34 miles – Country Spa
Lunch in Ovar with it”s blue tiled houses. We eat in Restaurante Casinha Júlio Dinis in Rua Júlio Dinis 24, Ovar. A short cycle to the Eurosol Estarreja Hotel & SPA with swimming pool where we stay in the countryside. Train every 30 mins today. Bars in the village at night.
Thursday 30th August – 30 miles – Mira – Colonial Lagoon
We pass through the Venice of portugal, Aveiro with its canals. We eat lunch in Restaurante Lila in the fishing village.Stay in the Hotel Quinta da Lagoa overlooking a lagoon with our own private beach. We are near Praia Mira beach with its fishing boats and oxen. Train every 30 mins to Averio. After that no train for 20 miles. In the evening we may go to the Brazilian Jobalo restaurant with picanha ( steak) or rodizio ( all you can eat meats) and visit the Sixties bar. It” clased as an Irish bar but unknown if it gets UK TV.
Friday 31st August – 30 miles – Figueira da Foz – pension
We cycle along the beach to the marina town. We eat lunch in Cacerola Restaurant and try Picanha the tradional fillet steak dish. Ask for Dose ( full portion €12) We stay in a residential house, Residencial Sao Juliao. Two twins and a single. Tonight we visit the Casino Figueria. No real train option today. An evening eating option may be the Restaurante Forte de Santa Catarina eat as much as you like seafood. €20
Saturday 1st September – 30 miles – Leiria
We travel through the village of Gigante and eat in Amor. We stay in Hotel Sao Luis with swimming pool in the Roman town of Leira under the 14th century castle on the banks of the river Lis. Train option – 4 trains a day from Figueira da Foz to Leira 06:23, 08:38,11:06, 16:04. Tonight we eat in Tromba Rija a buffet meal that gives us the chance to sample many cuisines. €20 to €30 per person. Or we try the south american restauant Restaurante Malagueta Afrodisíaca. Later we drink in the Pharmacia and have a game of darts.
Sunday 2nd September- 25 miles- Nazare
We visit Alcobaca a world heritage site with the biggest church in Portugal. On a Sunday we save €30 with free entry from 9 till 2. We eat in the Restaurante O Cantinho with menu dia for €15. Or at A Casa. We stay at the Adega Oceano in the fishing village of Nazare with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Train option – 4 trains a day from Leira to Valdo-Nazare-Alcobaca 7.11, 9.33, 12:06,17:10, The locals restaurant is at Conchinha da Nazare serving wood grilled fish.
Monday 3rd September – 25 miles – Obidos – 14th century hotel
The name “Óbidos” probably derives from the Latin term oppidum, meaning “citadel”, or “fortified city”. We stay in the medieval walled town of Obidos in the 4 star Real Obidos with swimming pool. We may eat lunch in a converted convent the Cantina Criativa.Trains from Valdo-Nazare-Alcobaca to Obidos 07:43, 10:01, 12:37, 17:41 The Bar Mouraria is a converted winery with tapas and snacks two streets away from the hotel. In Obidos the Ginjinha is served in small edible chocolate cups.
Tuesday 4th September – Lisbon
We get the 10:35 am train from Obidos and arrive Lisbon at lunchtime to drop off bikes. Lunch in cafe Buenes Aries for Argentinian steaks. We stay nearby on Rossio Square in the Pensão Praça Da Figueira. Breakfast not included. In the evening we visit the Barrio Alto and do 5 bars in the Rua do Diarrio.
Wednesday 5th September – Lisbon
We take tram 28 round the city for €1.35 The 45 minute route takes in hairpin bends, astonishing climbs and allows us to see the city for next to nothing. It leaves from Martim Moniz round the corner from the hotel.
Thursday 6th September
An early start at 6:45, take green line metro from Rossio Square , chnage at Alameda, red line metro to airport. We depart from terminal 2. Easyjet flight 9:35 arrives Edinburgh 12:40
