Fly to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport in just over 2 hours. A taxi from the airport to the Savoia Hotel Regency in San Donnino, a village north of Bologna costs €15 and takes about 11 minutes depending on traffic. The hotel is set in the park of Pilastro.
The hotel has many facilities except a snack type menu. We chose the deluxe room as it comes with a huge terrace.
There is a great fridge in the hotel room and a co-op 10 minutes walk down the road or a Conad 10 minutes up the road. We ate local most days with La Piccola Trattoria being our favourite run by a local family and serving great food. Lunchtime was the best value, with a €12 menu. We also enjoyed Il Mandarino a short walk down the road and one of the top Chinese restaurants in Bologna. Booking essential here as every table occupied within 15 minutes of opening.
There is also a pizza takeaway 5 minutes round the corner with €6 pizza and cold beers from the local shops.
For a longer hire and better quality bike Bike Rental Bologna is good with Andrea giving bikes and good tips for eating. They can deliver to the hotel. Bologna has many off-road bike lanes including a city circuit around the many city gates. Bike hire can also be easy with Mobikes found all over the city. Remember to finish your journey on the app and then lock the bike. This is important as to do it the other way is a €10 fine.
There is a direct bus link into town for €2 ( pay on the bus with a machine and exact change) on the number 20. In the evenings this is every 30 minutes and can get crowded. If you buy a book of 10 from the tourist office or tabac then €1.30 a journey and no hunting for change.
