Nantes Christmas Markets

The birthplace of Jules Verne who had Scottish roots with an ancient castle and many interesting sites. I enjoyed Nantes as it is a smaller town and you can walk everywhere.

Travel from the airport is easy with the airport bus that lets you off at the main train station. It takes 20 minutes and costs €9.

Christmas Markets

There are two main markets and plenty of French style on display.

Restaurants and bars

Le Nid , Tour de Bretagne, Place de Bretagne, 44047 Nantes. Great bar at the top of the tallest building in Nantes. Not the cheapest but worth it.

La Bodega , 8 Rue Beauregard, 44000 Nantes

Le Perrock , 2 Rue de la Baclerie, 44000 Nantes

Kim Restaurant – Thaïlandais & Vietnamien, 4 Rue de la Juiverie, 44000 Nantes. Fresh food, good service, cheap.

Pete McCool Irish pub, 22 Rue Scribe, 44000 Nantes I liked this bar where we sat outside opposite a cinema and watched the world go by. Nothing special but a good vibe.

Brady’s Nantes, 22 Allée Commandant Charcot, 44000 Nantes. Uk football here and Sky Sports. I enjoyed it.

Things to See and Do

Nantes Castle

Chateau du Ducs de Nantes , 4 Place Marc Elder, 44000 Nantes, France.  Free entry into castle and paid entry to exhibits. I particularly like the modern chute they have added to the rear wall. Very French.

Jules Verne Museum, 3 Rue de l’Hermitage, 44100 Nantes. This was my favourite attraction and I never realised Jules Verne had Scottish roots on his mother’s side. His novels were filled with Scottish characters and the first place he visited outside of Nantes was Edinburgh

Le Maillé-Brézé, Quai de la Fosse, 44000 Nantes. Decommissioned navy destroyer & museum offering engine room, weapons systems, and crew-area tours.

Les Machines d’isle, Parc des Chantiers, Boulevard Léon Bureau, 44200 Nantes. – Mad Max meets Jurassic Park. A great attraction in the old shipyard with mechanical animals, a huge carousel and a tree of life to climb.

Wallace Fountains

In Paris in 1870 Richard Wallace commissioned 78 public drinking water fountains for the poor of Paris and it is a sculptor from Nantes who designed and built these fountains. There are four in the city and having the family name Wallace I always look out for them.

Grand Blotterau Parc, Boulevard Auguste Peneau, 44300 Nantes. Beautiful park with Japanese pagodas.
